Mutrah Fort

It is a historic fort in Wilayat Mutra, Muscat.  Rising from the rock on which it is built, Muttra Fort cuts a majestic figure towering over the harbour.  At the top of the fort you are rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding harbor and the Gulf of Oman.

This would have made Muttra an almost impregnable position to defend against attacks and allowed it to observe the surrounding area from its watch towers.

Built by the Portuguese during their occupation in the 1580s, Muttra Fort was a formidable defense against the onslaught of the advancing Ottoman army.

Muttra Fort is relatively small because its main function is for observation and defense weapons, so it has no rooms or sitting areas.

Muttra Fort is a must-visit on the list of things to do, offering a window into the momentous past that helped build and create the diverse cultures and traditions that ultimately led to the Sultanate as we know it today.
