Bimmah sinkhole
Bimmah Sinkhole is one of the most beautiful natural swimming holes you will ever see.
Bimmah Sinkhole is located in the Dabab area of Wilayat Qurayyat on the north east coast of Muscat Governorate in the Sultanate of Oman.
It is 1.5 hours from Muscat and 55 minutes from Sur town. This sinkhole is very close to the Al Sharqiya area off the highway to Sur a few kilometers before Tiwi.
Bimmah sinkhole is a sinkhole or large depression in the earth’s surface, 20m deep and 50m to 70m round.
Local tradition says that the hole was created when a meteorite hit the Earth’s surface. The Arabic translation of the name means “deep well of the falling star”.
Geologists have confirmed that the 65-foot-deep pool is actually a sinkhole, but locals cling to the legend that a meteorite hit the site. When the local municipality developed the area into a park to preserve and protect the hole, the name Haweet Najm (The Falling Star) Park was chosen.
Generally speaking, sinkholes are the result of groundwater eroding rocks such as limestone and carbonate. Caves are formed from rock fissures. Finally the ground above the caves.
Hawiyat Najm is believed to be the result of a meteorite impacting the Earth.
Due to natural limestone erosion, a meteorite hit the site and created a natural depression, forming a small lake, so their name refers to that belief.
The sinkhole is about 50 to 70 meters in size and 20 to 30 meters deep. At the bottom lies a deep blue-green lake with piles of rocks – the remains of the collapse.
It is recommended to reach the park by 8 am to avoid all the rush, enjoy the beautiful scenery and take good photos.
